Pickin’ and grinnin’: My daughter playing a beautiful — looking and sounding — fiddle made by James “Winky” Hicks of Grove Hill, Ala., who accompanies her on his mid-1930s Gibson banjo. Winky is better known for his wonderful mandolins (he’s also famous for his turkey calls). This is the second violin he’s made and it is wonderfully crafted and has an extremely rich tone. Here’s a link to an Alabama Arts Radio Series that includes a recent interview with Winky.
